Koh Kood

Despite being the fourth largest island in Thailand, Koh Kood has managed to remain an unspoiled slice of tropical heaven. Located in Trat province, Koh Kood is the southernmost of the Koh Chang Island chain. With gorgeous beaches and little other infrastructure, it’s a resort destination that caters to those looking for a quiet beach paradise, with soft sand, crystal clear water, and little else.

Relaxing is the predominate activity on this island, whose unspoiled nature and leisurely local lifestyle are the prime attractions. Snorkelling or exploring the island’s beaches and forests are activities for the more adventurous, although boat trips to nearby islands for sightseeing, snorkelling, and scuba diving are also options. A small fishing village, located at Ao Salat on the Northeast of the island, provides an opportunity to experience island culture.

Battambang

The name Battambang or Batdambang, literally means “loss of stick” referring to a legend of the Preah Bat Dambang Kranhoung (Kranhoung Stick King). The population is nowadays around 250,000 people . It’s a riverside town, home to some of the best-preserved, French colonial architecture in the country.

Until recently Battambang was off the map for road travellers, but facilities have recently been improved and it makes a great base for visiting the nearby temples, such as Phnom Banon and Wat Ek Phnom, as well as the closedby villages.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap province is located in northwest Cambodia. It is the major tourist hub in Cambodia, as it is the closest city to the world famous temples of Angkor (the Angkor temple complex is north of the city). The provincial capital is also called Siem Reap and is located in the South of the province on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest sweet water reserve in whole Southeast Asia. The name of the city literally means Siamese defeated, referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century.

DAY 8 BATTAMBANG

This morning, meet your guide for a full-day tour.

WALK THROUGH THE HIDDEN HERITAGE OF BATTAMBANG.
What better way to explore Battambang than by foot. Together with an expert guide with a background in archaeology and history we’ll take a stroll around the town uncovering hidden history and fascinating legends. Our first stop is at Wat Sangker, an old pagoda once used as a weapons depot for the Khmer Rouge. We’ll continue to the old colonial bridge and the huge abandoned swimming pool that was once a glorious sports complex. We’ll stroll past the residence of the Thai Lord Governor; the ’Naga for Peace’ statue created from parts of a rifle; the remains of an old boxing ring; and the beautiful White Elephant Pagoda. Last and by no means least, we’ll actually get to enter inside the Golden Temple cinema, as this is the only tour allowed access to this historic movie theatre. We’ll end with a cold drink at an exquisite French colonial building that takes us back to the grand old days of Battambang.

ENJOY RIDING CAMBODIA BAMBOO TRAIN
Bamboo train called “norry” by the locals, it is a unique and creative form of transport. It consists of a small motorcycle engine-powered bamboo platform that rides on the railway tracks picking up and dropping off passengers, cargo, animals and motorcycles along the way. Virtually all visitors to Battambang have a go on the bamboo train - it is an unforgettable experience and best done in the early evening when the sun isn’t so high. Catch it while you can as plans are afoot to upgrade the line and introduce a more conventional train service!

VISIT PHNOM SAMPEOU
Visit Phnom Sampeau, a sacred mountain dotted with interesting pagodas and stupas. There is also a moving memorial to Khmer Rouge victims who were thrown into one of the many caves that pepper this holy mountain.

VISIT BATTAMBANG BAT CAVES AT SUNSET (25 KMS)
FLY of BATS is located near Phnom Sampeou, can be viewed at sunset, 15 million bats leaving a cave to hunt insects at night.

9

DAY 9 BATTAMBANG – SIEM REAP

This morning, meet your guide in the lobby for today’s excursions.

VISIT KHMER RICE NOODLES MAKING (NUM BANH CHOK) ( (30 minutes)
Num Banh Chok is the name of the noodles that are laboriously made by hand in heavy stone mills from fermented rice, but it’s also what the dishes made with these appetizing noodles are called.

VISIT RICE PAPER MAKING
The drive out through some beautiful countryside, you will notice locals making rice paper which is used for spring rolls.

VISIT PRAHOK MAKING (FISH PASTE)
Making the fish paste is a slow, labour-intensive process. Many different varieties of fresh fish arrive and are cleaned, chopped and sun-dried or otherwise treated before being smoked or soaked. Large wooden, stone or steel vats are filled with bits of fish mixed with herbs spices, and heaven-only-knows what else, and sit quietly fermenting in the shaded alleys of the factory/market. These pungent smelling stews are occasionally stirred with large wooden paddles, then pounded with a wooden plunger before being forked into bags for weighing and marketing.
Finish the trip in Battambang. Continue the journey to Siem Reap, with private vehicle and guide by land transfer.

VISIT THE VISITOR CENTER OF APOPO
Witness how Giant African Pouched Rats are being trained to save lives! APOPO’s visitor centre gives us the chance to discover the history of conflict in Cambodia and the impact of landmines on the local communities. We’ll even get the opportunity to meet and see the ’hero-rats’ in action.
To end a perfect day, we’ll climb to the upper terraces of one of the ancient temples to view the sunset.

Meals : Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation : Siem Reap for 3 nights

10

DAY 10 SIEM REAP

This morning, meet your guide in the lobby for today’s excursions.

The crown jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat is the national symbol and the highlight of any visit to Cambodia. The largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor temples, Angkor impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. To approach the temple, first cross the vast moat, continuing along a broad causeway lined with naga balustrades. Upon entering the main structure, ascend through a series of galleries and courtyard before reaching the central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over the causeway and across the surrounding countryside. On the way, stop to enjoy the intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface of the temple, with some 1,700 Apsaras, or celestial dancers, sculpted from the walls. Along the outer gallery walls run the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Angkor Wat is stunning at any time of the day, but sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful times to watch the play of light on the stones.
The fortified city of Angkor Thom covers an area of 10 square km. Enclosed by a wall and wide moats; the city includes many of Angkor’s most popular sights. Enter by the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, each carrying a giant naga. Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper Kings, former spaces for public ceremonies, both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs. Visit the ruined Baphuon, Royal Enclosure and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple. In this temple, one of the most popular and compelling in Angkor, explore the galleries of beautifully preserved bas reliefs and ascend narrow stairs to reach the central sanctuary, where giant stone faces smiling enigmatically down from every angle.
Then, let’s seek out the beauty of Ta Phrom - left to the clutches of the jungle, bound by the roots of massive trees. But nothing can prepare you for the sheer scale and the spiritual atmosphere that you will experience when seeing these ancient monuments in real life.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner

We’ll be transported back to the times of the early Khmer civilisation with a visit to the three temples that make up the Roluos Group. These are some of the earliest great temples and feature beautiful carvings and inscriptions. Today’s Highlights: Bakong Temple, Preah Ko Temple, Lolei Temple, Prei Monti.
