DAY 4 FULL DAY CITY TOUR & VISIT TO LAKE BOHINJ

Let’s take a guided tour of Bled, including a boat trip to Bled Island, which lies in the centre of the lake’s glacial blue waters. This small island is home to a church with a wishing bell (entrance included), a small museum and the historic South Staircase, a set of 99 steps built in 1655. Later, we’ll visit the medieval Bled Castle which overlooks the lake from its imposing clifftop perch. After some free time for lunch, we’ll visit Lake Bohinj, the largest lake in Slovenia. Although less well known, it is just as beautiful as Lake Bled, and is a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and hill walking. We’ll enjoy some free time here before visiting St John the Baptist church. Afterwards, we will continue to the Alpine Dairy Museum where we can enjoy some cheese tasting and get a glimpse of the traditional life for Bohinj shepherds of the past.

Today we’ll savour a full day excursion around Triglav National Park, home to the highest mountain in Slovenia. We’ll continue along our scenic mountain route towards Bovec via Vrsic Pass, the highest pass in the Julian Alps, and the Soca Valley. Known as The Emerald Beauty, the Soca is one of the few rivers in the world to retain its emerald, green colour throughout its length. We will have some free time to explore the town of Bovec at our leisure and have lunch (under our own arrangements). We will then begin our journey back to our hotel in Bled, via the ski resort town of Tarvisio.

We will have some free time before beginning our drive to the coastal town of Porec. On arrival in Porec, we will have a short city tour through the old town where we’ll observe its churches, medieval walls, round towers, and Gothic and Baroque houses. Porec’s most famous monument is the UNESCO protected architectural complex of Euphrasius Basilica, which is one of the best examples of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean. A highlight of the day will be our visit to the Roman Amphitheatre, known as the Arena of Pula, which was built back in the first century and was the site of many gladiator fights.
