DAY 2 BANGKOK

Today we will visit two of the most important sights of Bangkok.
The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is a giant lying Buddha, covered in gold leaf. The Grand Palace is a must-see for every visitor to Bangkok. Located close to the banks of the Chao Phraya River (River of Kings), the Grand Palace is the perfect example of an ancient Siamese court. Within the compound is the Temple of The Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), which houses Thailand’s most precious image of the Lord Buddha.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
You will travel on the Chao Phraya River (The River of Kings) and on through the Klongs (canals) of Thonburi. You will have the chance to observe and photograph the serene family homes and temples along the waterways, which gave the city the name “Venice of the East”. If time is permitted, we may make a stop at Baan Silapin* (“The Artist’s house”), a hidden treasure in the canals of Thonburi. On some weekends, if we are lucky, a traditional Thai puppet performance is shown at 2pm! You will also pay a visit to one of the most photographed sights in Bangkok, the Wat Arun. The majestic shrine has a pagoda of 76 m high. It is decorated with glazed ceramic pieces that reflect the rising sun and gave the temple its name.

Doi Suthep is about 15 kilometers from Chiang Mai, and on it is Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, a Holy Temple. The place can easily be reached from Chiang Mai. High in the hills above Chiang Mai is Doi Suthep temple, a spectacular shrine commissioned by King Kuena, ruler of Chiang Mai from 1367-88. According to an old legend, the king was persuaded to build the temple when the monk Sumana presented him with a bone relic of the historical Buddha. The king searched far and wide for a suitable spot to build the temple, but none could be found. Finally, he resolved to let fate decide its location, and he tied the relic to the back of an elephant and set it loose. For days the elephant stomped through the jungle, shadowed by the king’s men, until it reached the mountaintop of Doi Suthep. The elephant made a good choice because the king readily agreed to the spot. Construction began 1386 and was completed within a few years. After visit Wat Chedi Luang, the site of a formerly massive pagoda that was unfortunately destroyed in the great earthquake of 1545; after visit Wat Phra Singh, the lovely Lai Kam chapel houses the revered Phra Singh Buddha image. Wat Suan Dok is one of them, which dates back to th14th century when it served as the pleasure gardens to the Thai monarchy. Nowadays it houses several white Chedi’s, containing the ashes of Chiang Mai’s former Royal family.
