COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Whilst staying at Leroo La Tau you will visit the Khumaga village and Primary School, a school we support in several ways and work closely with. This heart-warming and eye-opening excursion offers you an insight into the people who you will fall in love with as you journey through our camp. It also highlights the impact your safari has on the people of Botswana when booking through a responsible safari operator. A cultural outing from Chobe Savanna Lodge entails a visit to the nearby community to immerse yourself into the everyday life of someone from a small village in Namibia. Chobe Savanna Lodge directly supports this village through various initiatives and employment opportunities.

SUPPORTING CONSERVATION INITIATIVES

The six-night Community and Conservation Package covers three distinct National Parks and protected regions, namely the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, the Moremi Game Reserve and the Kasika Conservancy, Namibia. By visiting these regions, your safari is making a direct contribution to the protection of these sensitive regions through park fee contributions. Desert & Delta Safaris also supports various wildlife conservation initiatives including the Botswana Rhino Relocation & Reintroduction Program as well as Elephants for Africa. Your safari makes a direct contribution to these initiatives and guests can enjoy a short talk by Elephants for Africa about their work in the area.

DAYS 1 – 2 MAUN – MAKGADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL PARK

On arrival at the Maun airport, you will be met by one of our Desert & Delta Safaris welcoming staff who will assist you with your light aircraft flight to Leroo La Tau on the edge of the Boteti River. Spend two nights at Leroo La Tau in one of our spacious chalets overlooking the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. On the western boundary of the renowned Makgadikgadi Pans National Park lies the Boteti River. Owing to the arid nature of the park, the river and the nutrient-rich western grasslands supply the essential water and sustenance for the wildlife that inhabit the region. The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is home to the second-largest zebra migration in the world, where thousands of zebras migrate to the Boteti River in the dry winter months (May to Oct) from their summer grazing ground further inside the park. The fascinating contrast between the Boteti River Valley and arid National Park makes it a fascinating region to include in any Botswana safari.

Activities on offer include daily game drives within the Moremi Game Reserve as well as motorboat safaris through the deepwater channels to explore the Okavango Delta. The Moremi Game Reserve is a wilderness paradise, with great game viewing throughout the year. Huge herds of impala and tsessebe are found in the area, while in the dry season large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, elephant, and zebra flock into the reserve. The rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope live in the papyrus banks of the waterways while lions, cheetahs, and packs of wild dogs hunt in the open grassland.
