DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN FUNCHAL

Arrival at Funchal airport and private transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day is free.

DAY 2 FUNCHAL

Breakfast at the hotel. Discover the main attractions in the city of Funchal, passing by the Cathedral, City Hall Square, the Fruit and Flower Market, “Mercado dos Lavradores” with its exotic fruits and fresh flowers (closed on Sundays). After, it is time to stop to taste a coffee and a small chocolate, in one famous chocolate shop. We continue our tour in the direction of Monte, where we can enjoy the shade of its large sycamore trees, or to stroll through the flower gardens throughout the year, then climb the long stairs leading to the Church of Our Lady of Monte. Emperor Karl I, the last monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, exiled to Madeira in 1921, is buried in the chapel next to this church. After the visit to the church, we will try one of the oldest transports in Madeira, the Carros de Cestos (toboggans), which weave their way around the tight bends. At the end of the toboggan ride, return to the center or to the hotel. Rest of day is at leisure.

DAY 3 EAST COAST TOUR

After breakfast, you will start a full-day tour in the east part of the island. The first stop will be at Pico do Areeiro, which is the second highest mountain of Madeira. On the way down to Santana, there is a short stop at Ribeiro Frio to see a Trout hatchery, surrounded by a beautiful garden, rare trees, and endemic plants of the Island. Experience a walk along the “Levada dos Balcões” to enjoy the beautiful panorama (an easy 1 hour walk). At Santana, you will have the opportunity to see the typical houses of that Region. On the way to Funchal, we’ll stop at Portela, from where one the most beautiful views can be seen, then on to Machico. the original capital of the Island. Return to Funchal through Santa Cruz village.
