When you disembark from your MSC cruise in Aqaba, you can enjoy its idyllic, sunny setting on the shores of the Red Sea, at the country’s southernmost tip.
From something of a dowdy backwater, in the last decade or so Aqaba has transformed itself into a pleasant, if still under-resourced, leisure destination. Hotels at all grades are springing up in the town as well as at luxury waterfront developments up and down the coast; investment is coming in to improve the city’s infrastructure and facilities. Some of the best diving and snorkellingin theworld is centred on the unspoiled coral reefs that hug the coast just south of the town – an engaging contrast with the nearby desert attractions of Petra and Wadi Rum.

The city centre forms a dense network of streets and alleys clustered just behind the beach road (called the “Corniche”). A shore excursion ($) can also be the opportunity to discover Petra. Tucked away in a remote valley basin in the heart of southern Jordan’s Shara mountains and shielded from the outside world behind an impenetrable barrier of rock, Petra remains wreathed in mystery

Beautiful views, UNESCO Heritage sites and art capital of Saudi Arabia

Homeporting in this bustling metropole, guests will have their pick of sites to visit, from the famed floating Al Rahma Mosque, which is built directly over the water, to the New Jeddah Corniche, offering a waterfront boardwalk and beautiful seaviews, where guests may even catch the sunset. For architecture buffs, King Fahad’s Fountain is the tallest of its kind and the under-construction Jeddah Tower (previously known as the Kingdom Tower) is set to become the world’s first 1-kilometre-high building.

Al Balad the old town of Jeddah dates back to the 7th century, boasts beautiful buildings and an ancient souk which are a must see. It is also one of the UNESCO Heritage sites, which Saudi Arabia has to offer.

A port city with a long and storied history, Jeddah is one of the largest cities in the Gulf Cooperation Council. Throughout its history, it has been the first stop for many pilgrims entering Makkah, which has led to it becoming the most diverse city in the country.

In recent years it has become the art capital of Saudi Arabia, while also offering some of the best coastal experiences in the country. It’s old town, “Al Balad”, is also one of the best examples of traditional city living within the country. Jeddah’s people come are very easy going and welcoming.

Pristine white sandy shores, private beaches and amazing dive sites

In Yanbu al Bahr you find the open desert touching the blue waters. Old Yanbu dates back 2500 years and offers one of the oldest souks, where traders used to come from places as far as Africa to sell their goods.

Divided into three administrations, Yanbu is one of the premiere beach destinations in Saudi Arabia. In the east there is Yanbu AlNakhl, founded more than two thousand years ago and dotted with villages.
In the south there is Yanbu AlSinaiyah, the industrial and governmental center of the region. Lastly there is Yanbu AlBahr, where the majority of the coastal activities are available.
This is the starting point of many diving adventures, where visitors can enjoy the rich coral and sea life off of the coast.

Famous for their musical exploits, the people of Yanbu are local experts of the Takht and Sesameh instruments

An unexpected treasure
Around 55km south of Suez is the town of Sokhna, whose beaches are popular with Egyptians but attract few foreigners. The town’s name derives from the hot springs (35°C) originating in the Jebel Ataqa.

During your MSC Grand Voyage you’ll be able to see light patches offshore that indicate coral reefs. MSC Grand Voyages also offer excursions to mystic places. Secreted amid the arid Red Sea Hills, Egypt’s two oldest monasteries – dedicated to St Paul and St Anthony – trace their origins back to the infancy of Christian monasticism, observing rituals that have scarcely changed over sixteen centuries.
You don’t have to be religious to appreciate their tranquil atmosphere and imposing setting, however, and there’s also scope for birdwatching in the vicinity. Around 30km south of Sokhna, the town of Za’Farana is the nearest settlement to the Red Sea monasteries. West from here, a wide valley cleaves the Galala Plateau and sets the road on course for the Nile, 168km away.
Called Wadi Arraba, its name derives from the carts that once delivered provisions to the monastery, though legend
attributes it to the pharaoh’s chariots that pursued the Israelites towards the Red Sea. Travelling for 33km along this road brings you to a turn-off to the south, from where a dramatic ridge of cliffs known as Mount Qalah can be seen in the distance, with the Monastery of St Anthony situated beneath.
The monastery is effectively a self-contained village complete with lanes of two-storey dwellings, churches, mills and gardens of vines, olives and palms, surrounded by lofty walls with an interior catwalk – although most of the buildings themselves are recent compared to the monastery’s foundation.

Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, disembarkation from the ship and transfer to Hurghada airport for your flight back to Cairo. In Cairo, visit the National Museum of Egyptian Antiquities which displays the most important collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world. Exhibited are over 120,000 objects from the Pharaonic and Graeco-Roman periods. Visit the Citadel, built in 1183, and the Alabaster Mosque of Mohammed Ali. Enjoy exploring the famous Khan El Khalili bazaar for some treasures to bring back home! Check in at your Cairo hotel.
