Excursion to the Mayan City of Caracol, with a stop at Rio On Pools

Located deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the largest known Maya site in Belize and one of the biggest in the Maya world. Caracol was a Classic Period urban center that spread out over 55 square miles with an estimated population of 180,000 people. Caracol’s enormous central core area covered 15 square Miles and was linked together by more than 20 miles of “sacbeobs” (causeways) that radiated outward from its epicenter. The temple “Caana” (Sky Place) rises 42 meters above plaza level and to this day is the largest man-made structure in Belize. Over 70 formal tombs have been excavated and many hieroglyphic texts have been found on stelea, altars, and ball court markers, capstones and wall facades. Ocellated Turkeys are one of the many wildlife species that you will find in this area. This region is also known as an excellent location for birding.

An expedition to Barton Creek Cave

Explore a stunning Maya ceremonial cave by canoe as licensed guides introduce you to one of Belize’s most fascinating natural and cultural wonders during this remarkable half day excursion. The tour travels about a mile along a meandering river flowing through the beautiful cathedral -like chambers and wide passages of the Barton Creek Cave, which has become a popular attraction in recent years with high standards of safety and environmental protection. Our licensed guides are all highly trained in natural history and Maya cultural heritage, making a Barton Creek Cave tour both an educational and highly enjoyable experience. Enjoy the waterfalls and a refreshing swim or just relax with a packed lunch amid tropical beauty. Barton Creek Cave was recently included in a list of “nine of the world’s most beautiful and unusual cave destinations,” by the highly regarded Mother Nature Network and no wonder – it is an amazing experience everyone –  young and mature – will remember forever.

DAY 5 CHAA CREEK RAINFOREST RESERVE · PLACENCIA

Transfer from Chaa Creek Rainforest Reserve to your hotel in Placencia. One of the best and most affordable Caribbean vacation spots, Placencia is a lovely little seacoast village in Belize. This friendly little village situated on the tip of a long sandy peninsula in southeastern Belize is an affordable, uncrowded little gem of a tropical paradise. With sixteen miles of sandy beaches, the impossibly blue Caribbean on one side, a mangrove-fringed lagoon teeming with life on the other, Placencia is indeed very special.

And just offshore are myriad cayes or small islands, dotting Belize’s Barrier Reef, the second largest reef in the world. Uncrowded diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and island exploration trips are less than an hour away, and you’ll also get to meet some of the friendliest people on the planet.

Everyone seems to know each other, and the main thoroughfare, a 4,071 foot long by 4-foot-wide footpath recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the narrowest main street in the world, is usually alive with conversation and laughter. Attire is emphatically informal, with the “no shirt, no shoes no worries” rule firmly in place throughout Placencia village.

The Blue Hole, featured in the famous Cousteau/Calypso documentary, is easy to get to, and Placencia is the best place to see huge whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Caribbean turtles, manatees, dolphins, giant rays, conchs, and lobsters are all native to the Belizean seacoast and commonly seen even while snorkeling.
